1. Initial Consultation
- During an initial consultation, the family and/or school team have the opportunity to describe concerns, gain information and receive professional advice about a possible speech language disorder or delay.
- The consultation may include a screening to determine whether a more complete evaluation is needed, information about typical speech and language development, referrals to other specialists, or suggestions on how to address mild speech and language delays without therapy.
2. Follow-Up Consultation
- Follow-up consultation is often consultation with public and private school teams, individual teachers and other staff, mental health practitioners, developmental services agency teams and staff, other professionals and families.
- A follow-up consultation may occur just once or be set up on a regular basis.
- Purposes of follow-up consultation include solving specific problems, training staff or family members, monitoring interventions, and collaborating on treatment design, development and maintenance of communication systems.
